Born in Pontiac, Michigan, Dart rcieved a B.S. (1951) from Eastern Michigan University and an M.A. (1952) from Wayne State University, where he studied under William Pitney. He was active in the Michigan Potters' Association as both chairman and board member. In 1961, with encouragement of John Foster, he was instrumental in organizing the first meeting of the Michigan Craftsmen's Council. He joined the faculty at Henry Ford Community College, Dearborn, in 1957 and became the chairman of the art department in 1960.  As a painter, Dart concentrated on abstract watercolor landscapes; as a ceramicist, on reduction-fired stoneware in both functional and sculptural forms.
