Alma M. Goetsch (1901-1968) & Katherine Winkler (1898-1976)

Featured Michigan Art Gallery Artists: Alma M. Goetsch (1901-1968) & Katherine Winkler (1898-1976)

Born in 1901, Alma M. Goetsch received her B.A.E. from the Art Institute of Chicago in 1928. She joined the faculty of Michigan State after graduating from the Columbia University Teachers College in 1937 with fellow Michigan artist Katherine Winkler (1898-1976).

In 1940, Goetsch and Winkler hired Frank Lloyd Wright to design a home in Okemos, Michigan now known as the Goetsch–Winkler House. The house is considered one of the most elegant examples of Wright's later Usonian architectural style

Goetsch and Winkler were rooted in the pre-World War II Midwestern progressive tradition. Known for their emphasis on free-thinking and social consciousness, students fondly recall walking with both professors in anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. This thoughtful activism characterized their collective works, emerging as a synthetism of pure colors and unconstrained brushwork. The art of both Goetz and Winkler represent reality in its gritty particularity as a series of complex structural arrangements defined by intertwined with tones and textures.
