James Crawford
James Crawford (American, b. 1944) collection available at the Michigan Art Gallery.
Born in Hillsdale, Michigan, in 1944, James Crawford attended Michigan State University and received both a B.F.A and an M.F.A from Wayne State University. He frequently worked with fellow artist Aris Koutroulis as a member of Common Ground for the Arts and the Detroit Workshop of Fine Prints. He served on the Board of the Michigan Association of Printmakers. One of Detroit’s first conceptual artists, Crawford has created works that range from geometric neon tube sculptures to photographs of piled objects. His installations and prints been commissioned by the Detroit Institute of the Arts (1970), Detroit Adventure (1973), and the Detroit Department of Parks and Recreation (1975).
