Biography:
Julian Alangua Puchet was born in Bilbao, Basque in 1924. Growing up in the Basque country during the Spanish Civil War created tension in his artistry that saw him embrace Spanish Surrealism and traditional Spanish religious iconography.
He began his career as a restoration artist and in the early 1940s he received the Piquer Scholarship with which he traveled through France and Italy. With a scholarship from the Provincial Council of Bizkaia, he expanded his studies in Madrid where he participated in the archaic restoration of the Church of Santa Teresa and Santa Isabel in Chamberí from 1945-1948. He carved the large-scale saint and evangelist carvings and the choir stalls, casting the gilding of the main altar and pulpit.
His other restoration works include:
The Royal Palace of El Pardo (Royal family residence in Madrid, Spain), the Monastery of Ucles (Cuenca, Spain), the Church of Vallehermoso (Madrid, Spain), the Church of Santo Domingo el Real (Madrid, Spain), the Cathedral of Segovia (Madrid, Spain), the Cathedral of Santander.
Though classically trained, his quintessential Spanish Surrealist renderings and sculptures gained Alangua an international following. Taking up residencies in Brazil, Peru, New York, and Detroit, he completed independent commissioned work, including a bust of the wife of Edward N. Cole, former President of General Motors Corporation.
