May Brown, American, 20th century. A 1940s oil on canvas Ann Arbor landscape, titled "Whistle Crossing". Signed "M. Brown" and dated "'42" lower right, titled with Scarab Club and Ann Arbor Art Association label, mounted Longyear Memorial Award and Ann Arbor News 1943 article verso. Image 23 1/4 x 17 1/4" high, in original painted wood frame 31 1/4 x 25 1/4" high overall.

Biography:

May Brown was an avid artist and art collector, while her husband Everett Brown was a professor of political science at the University of Michigan. They eventually moved to the classic MidCentury house located 2576 Devonshire in Ann Arbor, which was designed for them in 1959 by renowned local architect Robert Metcalf.
“One of Ann Arbor’s members of the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, May Brown of Day St. has received word that she has been awarded the highest honor in the gift of the society, the Esther Longyear Murphy Memorial Award. Mrs. Brown’s painting, “Whistle Crossing”, which she entered in the current exhibit of the society in the Scarab Club Detroit, was chosen for the honor by the jury selected.”
